If there is no fungal infection, chances are your nails may be peeling because of one of the following reasons:
- Overexposure to water and harsh detergents
- As we age nails become brittle because natural oils and moisture are reduced
- Using nail products that contain harsh chemicals like acetone or formaldehyde
- A diet poor in nutrients
A deficiency in the following nutrients could be causing your nails to become brittle and peel:
- C-Complex vitamins
- Vitamin C and Folic Acid
- Calcium
- Dietary essential oils such as Omega 3 fats.
Correcting these deficiencies could give you healthier nails and will also improve all around health . Here are some precautions to take to prevent your nails from peeling or cracking:
- Do not use nail removers that contain acetones. They dry nails out. Try ad use nail removers for a maximum of twice a month.
- Try not to remove cuticles at a salon as this may lead to infection
- Wear gloves while doing household chores that involve keeping your hands in water for too long.
- Whenever you moisturize your hands also rub some lotion into your nails.
- Don't use your fingernails as tools. Using them to open cans or peel off or pick out things can cause them to split.
