Dandruff is medically referred to as seborrheic dermatitis. It may occur along with acne especially in adolescents. The reason why these two conditions occur together is not yet known. Like acne, dandruff too may occur due to factors such as heredity, stress and hormonal fluctuations. Dandruff occurs when the scalp pores become clogged with dead skin cells. The skin of the scalp renews itself regularly. In this process the dead skin cells are pushed to the skin surface from where they are eventually shed. In their place, new cells develop. In some individuals this process takes place much faster than normal. This leads to an excessive shedding of dead skin from the scalp in the form of dandruff. Poor hygiene of the scalp and exposure to dust and smoke can also contribute to dandruff. In some cases, poor nutrition, extreme climates and use of harsh hair care products can also trigger off dandruff. Infection of the facial skin may also occur due to dandruff as the skin flakes may clog the facial pores.
Acne is known to be caused by hormonal changes in the body. These changes cause the sebaceous glands to produce an increased amount of sebum or oil. As the excess sebum reaches the skin surface, it clogs the pores and also attracts dead skin cells, dirt and bacteria. This results in the development of pimples. When the contents of the pimples spill out and spread to other areas of the skin, an acne breakout occurs. Acne commonly occurs during times of stress and menstruation as hormonal changes are common during this time. Poor dietary habits, improper hygiene and intake of certain medications may also lead to acne.
Individuals who suffer from dandruff and acne may benefit from treating the dandruff first. There are many anti-dandruff shampoos available in the market. There are also some home remedies that help to deal with dandruff. One such remedy involves the use of a vinegar solution to clean the scalp and hair. B vitamin supplements may also be prescribed for those affected by dandruff. There is also an association between vitamins and acne. Vitamin A is a valuable antioxidant that strengthens the skin and reduces oil production. Vitamin B complex helps to improve the skin tone and also helps in stress relief. Vitamins for acne treatment also include vitamin C which boosts immunity and protects against infection and vitamin E which assists in healing and skin repair.
