Remedy for dry and weak eye nerves
(Last Updated: Apr 8, 2008)
Dry eyes can be a result of harsh weather with strong winds, high altitude, the heating or air conditioning system you use, exposure to smoke or prolonged staring at the television or computer screen. Certain medications such as antihistamines, decongestants, sedatives, blood pressure pills, Parkinson's medications and birth control pills also cause dryness of eyes. Contact lenses also lead to dry eyes since they absorb the moisture in the eyes.
It is important to blink your eyes frequently so that your eyes are not stressed. You should also give your eyes adequate rest to keep them relaxed and strong. Apply cucumber slices, wet tea bags or cotton balls soaked in warm water with a few drops of rose water or lavender oil to provide relief to your eyes. It is also important to keep your eyes in good health by consuming plenty of fruits and vegetables rich in Vitamins, calcium, phosphorus and folic acid. Carrots and Spinach rich in Vitamin A, B1, B2, E and K as well as carotene, iron, calcium and phosphorus are excellent to strengthen your eyes. Beets, Blueberries, Apricots, Eggs and Beef are also very good for the eyes. It is crucial to give your eyes periodic rest while working by closing them and covering them with your palms for a few minutes. It is equally important to exercise the eyes regularly in order to keep the eye muscles and nerves strong and healthy.

It is not clear what exactly you mean by "weak eye nerves". If you are referring to a problem with the optic nerve, you should visit an ophthalmologist as this is quite a serious problem that can even progress to blindness. It is however unlikely that you would know that your optic nerve is weak or damaged without a doctor's diagnosis; if you have had already had a diagnosis, you should return for the proper treatment. Even if the problem is simply poor or deteriorating eyesight, you should get your eyes checked and wear corrective glasses or treat any underlying condition that may be affecting your sight.
Regarding the dry eyes, the best approach is to blink a lot. Particularly if you perform any activity that requires a lot of visual concentration, you probably tend to stare without blinking. You should therefore take frequent breaks, during which you should blink continuously for one minute. You should also avoid air conditioning, smoke, and dust, and any environments with dry air or strong drafts of wind, as far as possible. If you still experience a lot of pain and discomfort, you should consult your doctor, as medication, or at least artificial lubrication may be needed. In severe cases, there are also some surgical options that you will need to consider.
