Causes and Treatment

Chest congestion is quite a common problem that many people experience when they develop a cough, and is extremely troublesome, particularly when it irritates you through the night and disturbs your sleep. Two traditional remedies for colds and coughs are among the best treatments for chest congestion — steam inhalation and hot soup. In both cases, the hot liquid helps clear up the airways by getting rid of the phlegm more quickly. Hot soup, particularly chicken soup if you are a non vegetarian, is also very nourishing and is one of the few foods that people suffering from very severe coughs can bring themselves to eat. For steam inhalation, you can heat water and pour it into a basin, or buy a simple contraption that is available today specifically for steam inhalation. Adding a couple of drops of eucalyptus oil makes steam inhalation all the more effective. You should be cautious with this treatment however, as there are chances of burning yourself with the steam.

Another traditional remedy that is very useful in treating a cough is the salt water gargle. This gets rid of the phlegm and bacteria in the throat, and also soothes the throat, which tends to get sore with coughing and the infection.
