There are various causes for dark circles under the eyes. Some of them cause a temporary darkening while others are permanent. It is important that you try to find the root problem and once you have eliminated it, your dark circles will completely fade away. If you have had this problem for a long time, it could be due to an Iron Deficiency. Iron is essential for the production of haemoglobin and if this level is low your skin tissues will not receiving an adequate amount of oxygenated blood. This causes the vessels in the skin under the eye, to clot and pool forming dark circles. This is one of the commonest causes of dark circles and it is also one of the easiest to treat. Make sure that your diet consists of iron-rich food and if necessary take an iron supplement. Once your body starts receiving an adequate amount of oxygenated blood, your dark circles will disappear completely. If you have lost a lot of weight during a short span or if you are underweight, you could be suffering from anaemia. You can go in for a routine blood test to rule out this possibility.
Nasal inflammation generally caused by allergies or a sinus congestion often causes venous congestion. This impairs the flow of blood throughout the body and often causes purplish dark circles. If you do suffer from either of these conditions, it would be advisable that you get medical treatment that will relieve nasal condition and thus eliminate dark circles.
To get rid of temporary dark circles, you can place thin slices of cucumber over your eyes for a couple of minutes. You can also use cool moist teabags as they are effective in getting rid of temporary dark circles. Finish off by splashing your eyes with cold water.
