While there is no magic "cure" for a black eye, there are some things that can help speed healing. First of all, it is important to see a doctor anytime you get a head injury (including a black eye) since there can be neurological damage if there is swelling or bleeding anywhere near the brain.

If you have been to the doctor already and were checked for signs of concussion (trauma to the brain), you can try the following things to speed the healing:

  • Ice-Cold Compress: This decreases swelling and inflammation; use ice compresses for 15 minutes at a time 2-3 times a day or as needed for pain and swelling after 72 hours, you can try contrast hydrotherapy apply a moist warm compress over the eye for 3 minutes followed by a ice cold compress for 30 seconds. Repeat this 3 times. The contrast creates a pumping action and helps bring fresh blood and nutrients to the area while pushing out toxins and inflammatory proteins.

In naturopathic medicine we often try to "remove the cause", first.  However, to help with tissue bruising after the fact, a topical application of homeopathic arnica gel or cream on the skin may be helpful.  Arnica at a low homeopathic potency can also be taken orally to minimize bruising.
