I have cholesterol and uric acid. I have heard that some of the foods which are good to lower cholesterol aren't good for uric acid as in the case of oatmeal. Please advice

The very first thing to know is whether you have high levels of uric acid or low levels. If you have excessive uric acid in your body, then you should know that the foods that are rich in cholesterol are also the same ones that are rich in uric acid. There is no question that you are suffering from a discrepancy of any sort in terms of diet. For example, red meat, particularly organ meat, is one of the richest sources of uric acid and is also responsible for large cholesterol levels. There is no solid scientific evidence to prove that oatmeal is a cause of increasing levels of uric acid in your body. For that matter, there is no solid evidence to prove that oatmeal will contribute to lowering the levels of uric acid in your body either. However, there is plenty of evidence that links reduction of cholesterol levels to eating oatmeal on a regular basis. As a matter of fact, if you are suffering from the problem of high cholesterol, you must avoid red meat, which is supposed to be extremely high in cholesterol. You should stick to white meat, grilled, boiled or in soup form. It is also important to practice certain diet restraints while trying to lower cholesterol. Avoid eating egg yolks, try to eat them every alternate day, and have only egg whites. Leafy green vegetables lead to a healthier heart. It is important that you consume leafy greens at least twice a day. A salad is the easiest way to ensure this.

It is also important that you keep your weight under control to check cholesterol. Small and simple changes can take care of this. For instance, switching to skim milk instead of whole milk will make a huge difference, and you will not even realize when and how you lost weight. Change your choice of oil to olive oil for cooking. This is the only cholesterol free oil which is healthy to consume and will help you. Totally remove red meat from your diet. This will help in all three battles - the bulge, the cholesterol as well as excessive uric acid. Remember that game meat is a particularly rich source of uric acid. Make it a point to avoid it altogether. The other thing you can do is increase your water consumption to at least 10 liters a day. This will take time, but it is well worth the time as well as the effort.
