In any injury, tissues get destroyed, and then need to be repaired by the body. Scarring is a natural part of this repairing and healing process, and almost all wounds leave scars. In the repairing process, what the body creates is not always normal tissue, but fibrous, scar tissue. The extent of scarring depends on a number of factors - these of course include the severity of the injury, as well as the location of the injury, the presence of infection, and the manner in which the wound healed. In any case, all scars fade with time; very severe scars will of course never disappear, but tiny scars usually disappear completely within a few years.
In your case, you have not mentioned exactly how big the scar on your lip is, but if it has lasted for ten years and still bothers you, then I assume it is a rather big scar. Unfortunately, this means that time alone will probably never get rid of this scar. There are home remedies to get rid of a scar like this; smaller scars can be treated to some extent by using substances such as aloe gel, honey, and vitamin E oil, but with large scars, these treatments offer little or no improvement. There is however a variety of medical treatments available today and some of them show excellent results.
Surgical options include traditional surgery and laser surgery or laser resurfacing. Other options include steroid or corticosteroid injections, as well as collagen injections, which are given directly at the site of the scar. However, steroids always have the risk of side effects, and the effects of collagen injections do not last. More recent treatments include some that use silicone gel and silicone sheets, but the effectiveness of these treatments is not yet fully clear.
First however, you should consider whether the scar on your lip is really bad enough to be worth the expense and pain of a surgical procedure. We are often much more critical of our own appearance than other people are - ask a trusted relative or friend what they think of the scar and getting it removed. If after thorough discussion and consideration, you feel you should go ahead and have the scar removed, you can meet a skin specialist or a cosmetic surgeon in your area. After examining the scar personally, he or she will decide what options are available and suitable, and will discuss them with you before proceeding.
