Red spots anywhere on the face can be quite unsightly and can cause you quite a bit of embarrassment. The spots may be few or they may be many that have clustered together to form a kind of rash. There are many causes for these kinds of spots and you should consult a doctor to ascertain the underlying cause. This will help you to treat them in the appropriate manner.

The appearance of the spots may provide a clue as to origin. Sometimes the spots may occur singly while at other times they may form small clusters. Some red spots develop a whitehead on the top while others may seem to grow.

The presence of other symptoms may also give a clue as to their origin. A swelling accompanying the red spot may point to an accumulation of blood and signify an infection. This may also be accompanied by a fever. An itchy feeling may accompany the spots and signify an allergic reaction.

One of the most common causes of red spots may be contact dermatitis that results when your skin comes in touch with some foreign material. This may happen when you wear a hat or a helmet. You may suffer from an outbreak of acne due to poor hygiene or hormonal fluctuations. An itchy feeling may occur if the red spots have been caused by an allergic reaction to something you’ve eaten or some artificial fiber in your clothes. The red spots may also be caused by insect bites.

If you are unable to see a doctor immediately, there are several home remedies that you can try for the red spots and other associated symptoms such as itching. These include:

  • Apply calamine lotion to the affected area. This may help reduce the itching.
  • An outbreak of acne can be treated by keeping your face clean. Use a mild cleanser to wash the skin. An ointment containing benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid may be applied.
  • You may be given antihistamines for rashes that are caused due to an allergic reaction. These may make you drowsy so do not drive or indulge in any activity that requires motor coordination on your part.
You must consult your doctor as soon as possible to ascertain the underlying cause of the red spots. While the spots are most probably not serious, they could be the result of some disease such as chickenpox that will require prompt medical attention.

I don't think that lack of sleep is the cause of these spots. Since I can't see them I recommend you make an appointment with your primary care doctor or a dermatologist.
