The surface area of an ovary sometimes has sacs that are filled with fluid and these sacs are known as ovarian cysts. Ovarian cysts are common amongst women and are mostly harmless and do not cause any discomfort and tend to disappear without any specific treatment. Only those ovarian cysts that are potential threats, wherein they may rupture, are treated. There are no specific symptoms that might guide you to the occurrence or presence of ovarian cysts. Menstrual irregularity, nausea, breast tenderness, unexpected pressure on your bladder or pain in the pelvic region before periods and during sexual intercourse could be some of the signs of presence of ovarian cysts.
In case you experience severe abdominal pain, along with fever or severe pelvic pain, it is advised that you consult your doctor. Ovaries follow the normal course of growth of follicles, structures that are similar to cysts. There are chances that the follicle continues growth and develops into a functional cyst. The start of a follicular cyst is when there is no LH surge. As a result of this, the follicle doesn't self destruct but develops into a functional cyst. These cysts, though mostly harmless, disappear within a few menstrual cycles. A cyst in the corpus luteum, which disappears without treatment, can at times grow and bleed. This bleeding can cause the ovaries to twist, which can stop blood supply and cause severe pain in the abdominal or pelvic region.
Ovarian cysts can also lead to vaginal bleeding. This is a symptom and also a side effect. You might experience high amounts of bleeding during menstruation. You may also experience spotting in between your periods and your breasts may start to feel swollen and tender. Excessive bleeding during your menstruation period generally is a result of a surgery involving ovarian cysts. Do not be surprised if you do not get your periods for up to three months after a cyst surgery, as this is an after-effect of the surgery. The blood flow during menstruation that you experience after the surgery tends to be higher than the flow before the surgery. Heavy bleeding should not continue for more than two days. In case it does continue for more than two days it can be treated as a symptom for ovarian cysts. Vaginal bleeding after you are through with your menstrual cycle is known as dysfunctional bleeding or uterine bleeding. It is important that you not ignore any irregularities and consult your doctor so that you can get treatment before your condition worsens.
