Constipation and gas are interrelated. Constipation is in fact one of the most common gastrointestinal conditions that are accompanied by gas or flatulence. Although constipation may not seem like a serious gastrointestinal problem, it can lead to further complications such as piles. Individual who suffer from infrequent bowel movements, strain during bowel movements or pass hard stools are said to experience this condition. The concept of regular bowel movements may vary from person to person; however, people experiencing less than 4 bowel movements per week are said to be constipated. As mentioned earlier, constipation is not a serious health condition; however, if left unattended it could very well develop into a serious health condition.
Constipation can be treated effectively at home with the help of simple dietary and lifestyle changes.
- The main cause for constipation is a lack of water. After the food you have eaten has been digested and assimilated, the leftover waste is pushed through the large intestine into the small intestine. During this process the intestine muscles absorb water and minerals from the waste. The waste is then passed on to the colon which further drains it off its water content. This makes the waste hard and dry. If your colon muscle contractions are slow it could also cause this waste to stick to the walls. This leads to constipation. Therefore drinking plenty of water daily is the most preferred remedy when it comes to treating constipation. Starting your day with a warm glass of water is the most effective way of stimulating smooth bowel movements.
- For another remedy you can add two teaspoons of honey in a warm glass of lemon juice. Drink this solution as soon as you wake up in the morning. Honey contains fructose and other important minerals that help in ensuring smooth bowel movements. Lemon juice is abundant in vitamin C and helps in keeping the colon hydrated.
- Fiber is an important material present in the intestines that helps in the smooth passage of waste from the intestines to the colon, and from the colon to the rectum. Therefore, consuming foods rich in fiber content is also very beneficial in treating constipation. Cooked beets, cooked collard greens, carrots, celery, raw onions, spinach, green peas, sweet potato and other green leafy vegetables are some fiber rich foods. Additionally, barn cereal, whole wheat pasta and whole wheat bread are also good sources of dietary fiber.
- Including fruits like apples, plums, dried figs, pear, grapes and bananas will also prove beneficial due to their high fiber and water content.
- Avoid rich foods and junk foods while experiencing constipation as they are not easily assimilated by the body, thus worsening the condition.
Solving your problem of constipation will also take care of the accompanying gas problem. However, you can include mint leaves, ginger and garlic in your diet to experience immediate relief from gas.
