Dandruff is characterized by the flaking and scaling of the skin on the scalp. This is a common condition and a large number of people suffer from it. Dandruff tends to cause embarrassment and consciousness as the flakes become quite visible, especially on dark colored clothes. Many individuals with dandruff also experience hair fall. However, dandruff has no direct effect on hair loss. It does cause significant amount of scratching and the affected individual may itch the scalp constantly. This could cause weakening of the hair roots, thereby resulting in gradual hair fall. An individual may suffer from dandruff due to many reasons. The fungus known as mallazesia globosa is the main cause of dandruff. This fungus is normally present in the atmosphere. Excessive use of hair products could also lead to dandruff. Some people develop dandruff due to hormonal imbalances in the body. Hot and humid weather could also trigger off flaking of the scalp. There are also studies which show that stress may be associated with dandruff. Genetic factors, poor hygiene of the hair and scalp, excessive perspiration, increased exposure to the sun and excessive consumption of sugar and fatty foods are some of the other causes of dandruff.
For severe dandruff it is advisable to consult a dermatologist. There are many treatments for dandruff in the form of shampoos and conditioners. These contain selenium sulfide and zinc pyrithione which prevents the growth of fungus. Regular oiling is good for hair growth as it nourishes the roots and encourages blood circulation in the scalp. However, the scalp must not be rubbed too vigorously while oiling as it could damage the hair roots and lead to hair fall. Gentle circular movements using the finger tips are the best way to allow for proper penetration of the oil into the scalp. Also use natural oils such as coconut or olive oil. It is also possible that you may be scratching the scalp excessively due to the dandruff. This may cause the hair to break and fall off during oiling.
A good way to treat dandruff is to massage the scalp with coconut oil to which a few drops of lime juice have been added. You may also soak some fenugreek seeds in water overnight and grind into a paste the next morning. Apply this paste to the scalp and leave it on for half an hour. A mixture of Indian gooseberry, curd and lime juice is also an effective natural remedy for dandruff.
