Phlegm is the fluid that our respiratory system produces in order to protect us from pathogens and irritants that we inhale. When we inhale bacterial and viral pathogens our bodies start to produce copious amounts of phlegm in an attempt to flush out the system. At the same time our immune system increases the body’s production of white blood cells that are then directed to the respiratory system where they attack the invasive microbe. This is why phlegm that is produced when we have a respiratory infection is generally white or light yellow in color. Persistent phlegm can be caused by continuous phlegm production, and in order to eliminate this problem it is important to understand and treat the root cause.
Phlegm production has been studied and researched for many years and so it is now easy for us to understand the causes behind the various changes it undergoes. Persistent phlegm production should not be ignored as it is a definite sign that something is amiss within the respiratory system. If the phlegm that is produced is clear, it is probable that it is caused by a localized irritant. This would include allergens such as pollen and dust that irritate the respiratory tract which causes an increase in phlegm production. Allergies to pollen are most commonly observed in spring as this is when pollen particles in the air are at their highest levels. If you notice that you are fine while you are indoors but that you develop congestion or a runny nose as soon as you step outside, it is very probable that you are allergic to pollen. If you find that you develop congestion after you use a perfume or a deodorant, it could possible that you are allergic to one of the components of your spray. In order to be sure of this you would need to avoid it for a while and see if there is any improvement. Thick yellow phlegm is generally indicative of an infection and you will need to get rid of the infection in order to stop this excessive phlegm production. You could try turning on the hot water in your bathroom and allowing the steam to collect. Remain in your bathroom for at least 10-15 minutes, breathing in this steam as it will help to get rid of the excess phlegm that has collected in your respiratory tract. If you find that you are unable to get rid of this problem, or if you notice traces of blood in your phlegm, make sure that you consult your doctor for an accurate diagnosis.
