Burns at quite commonplace and often occur at home. First aid becomes quite important in such cases till proper medical care is obtained for the burnt area. Skin protects the body and burnt skin can lead to all kinds of infections, dehydration, and hypothermia including dizziness, confusion, weakness, chills, shivering and cold sweat. These are symptoms that you should seek medical help.
Burns can be caused by many things, chemical burns, wet heat like steam or hot water or from radiation or friction or even thermal. Thermal burns are the most common. Burns can be first degree, second degree or third degree burns. Third degree is the worst kind where the skin burns through layers sometimes affecting organs too. Symptoms include blisters, pain, peeling skin, shock, and white or charred skin. Third degree burns take the longest to heal.
Home remedies for burns often help cure burn marks. Remedies for burn, especially burns on skin need first aid treatment immediately. Before you give first aid it is important to gauge how deep the burns are. If you see charring then chances the burn damages are deeper than just superficial burns.
If it is a minor burn, apply cool running water as the first step of treatment. If you see blistering, the cool water will take away the pain. Cover the burn area with clean and sterile cloth. Do not immediately apply any ointments to the burnt area if it is severe. Do not apply any butter or oil on burns. For mild burns, where the skin looks reddened, you can apply some burn ointment. If it is a second degree burn, do not directly apply ice on it. Do not break the blisters if they form on it.
Home remedies for burns pain, especially for burns from boiling water and oil needs to be administered quickly. Honey is a common home remedy used for burns. Covering the burns with honey produces less scarring. Another remedy often used for first degree burns is diluted vinegar. Cover the injured area with a clean cloth soaked in diluted vinegar. It is usually painless and if it starts to pain, you should change the bandage.
Aloe vera is also known to help burns. Directly apply aloe vera gel on the burn area. It's soothing rejuvenating properties will help the burned skin. Diluted lavender oil is also known to help reduce the pain. A combination of aloe vera gel, vitamin C, lavender oil and vitamin E can work as a good salve that can be applied through the day. Marigold, or calendula infused oil or calendula lotion, all can be applied on burns. Echinacea is known to help. Sometimes putting a banana peel on the burned area of the skin till it becomes black has proved beneficial for burn injuries. Papaya also has enzymes that heal skin so putting strips of its skin on burnt skin has also been known to help. Yogurt has also been known to make a person feel better but you should wait for at least 30 minutes before you apply this. Swabbing olive oil has also been known to bring relief.
Lemon juice and tomato slices both can help gently remove the dead skin and help the skin rejuvenate. Once your burn has healed, you can also continually massage the area with almond oil to get rid of the scar. Fuller's earth and fenugreek seeds both help in removing burn mark scars. Cold water with turmeric has antiseptic properties which work well on burned skin.
But all these remedies are for first and second degree burns. Do not try these remedies on third degree burns, as they need immediate medical attention. After you have attended to a burn, you should visit your doctor for further care and advice.
