I sometimes feel off balance like I am going to fall. Please help

Every one suffers from dizzy spells now and then. Maybe you got up too fast and felt the blood rush to your head causing you to stagger a bit. Possibly, you experienced a fleeting sensation of spinning that was brought on by a sudden movement or even a sudden cessation of movement. There are a number of reasons for this happening - most of it related to the delicate balance of the vestibular systems in your inner ears.

However, from your question, it is obvious, that this feeling of imbalance or dizziness is not a one off but rather a more recurring condition. One explanation is that you are experiencing what is known as a balance disorder. Before you consult with your doctor, answer the following questions:

  • Do you feel unsteady most of the time?
  • Do you often feel that the room is spinning around you?
  • Do you feel that you are moving even when you are sitting or standing still?
  • Do you actually lose your balance and fall?
  • Do you often feel like you are falling down?
  • Do you feel faint or lightheaded?
  • Is your vision blurred?
  • Do you experience moments of confusion and disorientation?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, visit your doctor at the earliest. There are several possible reasons for a balance disorder such as:

  • The build up of crystals in the canal fluid in your ears can cause a sensation of spinning and false movement even when you are still
  • A viral infection of the nervous system that may cause a sudden onset of dizziness or vertigo
  • A condition known as acute labyrinthitis can lead to problems with your balance as well as hearing problems
  • Other causes of balance disorder include head injury, circulation problems or ear infections
The treatment of any balance disorder will depend on the cause of the condition. For example, if a certain medication may be at the root of your dizziness, your doctor will suggest another medication. There are also sets of simple movement exercises known as the Epley Maneuver that can help dislodge the build up of crystals in the inner ear. A visit to a trained therapist to learn these moves is highly recommended. Until the condition clears try to avoid driving or walking in the dark to avoid any injury. Also wear sturdy shoes and maybe even a cane to make walking easier.

  1. You may be suffering from vertigo or a trauma at the area of the medulla oblongata, or may be a vestibulocochlear problem like meniere's in the ear cavity.
  2. Get the proper diagnosis done. There may be a sudden dip of blood pressure thereby causing an imbalance.
  3. Its better that you immediately take a safe position such as sitting or standing. It's better that you do not drive and ask someone to accompany with you always.
  4. If your blood pressure has dropped, then have 2 pinches of common salt with 1 tsp honey in 1 cup of water.
