Remedies for Strep Throat

There are many home remedies for a strep throat. Do however, check with your medical practitioner before trying out any of the strep throat home treatments mentioned below.

  • Gargle with salt water as this helps to reduce the inflammation in the throat as well as help relieve the pain. Gargle a few times a day for best results.
  • Modify your diet. Stay away from spicy foods – they will irritate the throat more. Opt for soups and soft foods instead.
  • Use a mist humidifier to increase moisture in the air.
  • Also ensure that you get enough sleep. Sleep is important as it helps the body to rejuvenate and helps to build up and maintain the immune system.
  • Chamomile tea has analgesic properties and helps to relieve headaches and throat pain. Chamomile tea can also help lower the fever and prevent dehydration as well.
  • Garlic also has antibiotic properties and can be used as a home remedy for strep throat.
  • Home remedies for strep throat include the use of lavender, peppermint, rosemary, jasmine and thyme. All these help to reduce the soreness and help to relax the body. These can be used either as ointments or in essence form.
  • Sage helps to protect the tissues of the respiratory system and the throat and therefore reduces the inflammation in these areas. You can consume sage in either capsule form or as a tincture.
  • Strep throat home treatment also includes avoiding very hot and very cold beverages as these lead to further throat pain and irritation.
The above home remedies may help with treating a strep throat infection but it is advisable to use them simply as complimentary treatment to any medical treatment that your doctor has prescribed.
