Treatment for Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral palsy may be a non-progressive disease where the symptoms do not worsen over time however most people with cerebral palsy require long-term care and treatment. Treatment for cerebral palsy will depend on the range and severity of the symptoms and should be customized on a case-to-case basis. Treatments include:

  • Medications to Reduce Symptoms: These include muscle relaxants to relax stiff muscles and joints and Botox injections to relieve muscle spasms.
  • Therapies: Different therapies for children with cerebral palsy include physical therapy to increase strength, coordination and balance, occupational therapy, speech therapy and sensory integration therapy.
  • Surgery: In extreme cases, surgical intervention to repair deformities of the bones and joints may be performed. Another procedure for children with severe CP is the severing of nerves to relax the muscles and reduce pain.

Home Remedies

Some of the common herbs used for cerebral palsy treatment include herbs such as ginger, rosemary and gingko biloba. These are important for their antioxidant properties and improve the functioning of the brain and the central nervous system. Regular dosage of these herbs also improves immunity and helps strengthen muscle tone. However, these sorts of alternative therapies should only be administered in combination with regular medical treatment and physical therapy and only under the supervision of your doctor. Cerebral palsy is a medical condition and treatment should never be self-administered.
