Treatment for Dehydration

Treatments for dehydration depend on the cause of the condition. Prevention is usually the first step towards treatment of dehydration. The simplest treatment for dehydration is fluid replacement. This can be performed by drinking more water. If a person is too sick to consume water, it is administered to them intravenously. Oral rehydration should only be attempted with small amounts of fluids. You can also consume clear fluids such as clear broths, water, jello, popsicles and oral rehydration solution made from water and vital salts.

The health care practitioner will recommend the fluids you should consume, based on any preexisting medical conditions and the extent of dehydration. The doctor then measures the success of rehydration therapy by monitoring the urine output. If there is fever and additional symptoms, you may have to use medications to treat these symptoms as well.
