Living with Turner Syndrome

Living with turner syndrome poses some challenges. Many women experience learning difficulties, but most of them are able to attend regular school and courses. These women are able to write and memorize well and also develop good language skills. Here are some suggestions for those coping with Turner syndrome:

  • Understand that even though your condition affects you in many ways, it is still only a fraction of your total self.
  • Participate in activities that you enjoy such as sports. Seek your doctor’s advice about which physical activities are suitable for you.
  • Join a support group. Interacting with other girls affected by Turner syndrome will help in dealing with your own challenges. Ask your doctor for help in locating a support group in your area.
  • Sign up for volunteer work. This will give you inner satisfaction and helping others will also help to boost your self-esteem.
  • Keep a journal in which you can jot down your thoughts and feelings about what you are going through.
  • If you are facing difficulties at school, talk to your school counselor about it.
  • Consider talking to a therapist if you are experiencing low self-esteem or other problems which prevent you from living freely. If you feel you may need such help, discuss it with your parents.

You as a parent can also join a support group or a help center for Turner syndrome. You can obtain educational material and other resources pertaining to the condition.

If you have a friend with Turner syndrome, try to respect her emotional needs. She may be uncomfortable talking about her condition and hence it is best to let her express herself when she feels like it. You can also be a supportive friend by planning and participating in activities you both enjoy. Being there for her when she needs comfort or support is also one of the best things you can do as a friend.
