Symptoms of Umbilical Hernia

Usually the symptoms of Umbilical hernia will be different for different people.

  • One of the most common signs of umbilical hernia is the development of a visible bulge around the navel of the individual.
  • Alternatively, the area around the navel or the abdomen of the individual diagnosed with Umbilical hernia may seem to be swollen or bloated.
  • Those suffering from umbilical hernia may also experience a sensation of burning or pain in the swollen area even if there may be no pressure applied externally. This pain may escalate by lifting a heavy object, sneezing or by coughing.
  • Another one of the signs and symptoms of umbilical hernia is a discoloration of the skin along the navel which may appear to be grey, blue or even reddish in color.
  • If the Umbilical hernia is not treated in time then there may arise other medical conditions such as the intestines getting blocked - in case of an incarcerated hernia.
  • Alternatively a strangulated hernia may result in a part of the intestine dying completely on account of the decrease or complete cut off of the blood supply.
  • Signs or symptoms of an Umbilical hernia in case of infants include the baby being in pain for no apparent reason, frequent vomiting or a visible bulge near the navel which is swollen, tender or discolored.
