Symptoms of Yellow Fever

Two of the most obvious symptoms of Yellow Fever include yellowing of the skin and fever, giving the disease its name. However, there are several other signs and symptoms which have been associated with Yellow Fever.

After getting infected by the Yellow Fever virus, a person goes into the incubation stage for around 3 to 5 days. During this stage, the symptoms of yellow fever are generally absent. Once the incubation stage passes, the acute phase of the disease starts, where the infected person may experience signs and symptoms like:

  • Severe headaches
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Dizziness
  • Pain in the muscles (especially the muscles of the back and the knee)
  • A loss of appetite
  • Reddening of the eyes, tongue and face
These symptoms of Yellow Fever could last for several days, before they improve and disappear. Around 15% of the patients suffering from yellow fever then enter the toxic phase, which could be fatal. The patient also goes through symptoms that are a lot more severe. Some of the signs and symptoms seen in this stage include:

  • Jaundice, characterized by yellowing of the skin and the whites of the eyes
  • Decrease in the frequency of urination
  • Arrhythmia or heart dysfunction
  • Brain dysfunction, which could include seizures, delirium or coma
  • Severe pain in the abdomen
  • Vomiting, which could include blood
  • Bleeding from the mouth, nose and eyes
  • Kidney and liver failure
It is important to seek immediate medical attention in case any of the symptoms mentioned above are noticed.
