Causes of Fractures

Accidents and sudden falls are the most common causes of fractures in adults and children. A fracture may occur due to certain medical conditions which make the bones weak, such as osteoporosis. This type of fracture is common among older people and those with bone cancer. Stress fractures are seen mostly in athletes who place certain bones and joints in the lower extremities, repeatedly under stress. Some of the risk factors that increase the possibility of a fracture in case of a fall or high impact force are:

  • Advanced age
  • Lack of adequate calcium in the diet
  • Excessive use of tobacco
  • Hormonal disorders
  • Lack of sufficient physical activity
