Prognosis of Anthrax

Certain types of anthrax infections such as cutaneous anthrax have a positive prognosis. As long as the infection is detected early and antibiotics are prescribed, most cases will be cured and return to normalcy in a matter of a few weeks. If, however, treatment is not meted out in time, the infection can spread to the blood and may even lead to death.

The prognosis of inhalational anthrax is not so optimistic. If the infection develops into the second stage without any treatment, it may lead to coma or even death.

Gastrointestinal anthrax while rare nowadays can lead to death once the infection has spread to the bloodstream. Other types of anthrax infections such as meningeal and septicemic anthrax may require hospitalization.
