Wilson’s Thyroid Syndrome (WTS) is a group of reversible symptoms caused by the dysfunction of the thyroid system. It is not easy to detect because people with WTS often have normal blood test reading for thyroid gland (T3 and T4). According to Dr. Denis Wilson, who first identified WTS, most thyroid problems are not due to hypothyroidism, but due to the thyroid system dysfunction. So, how to identify this disease? Most characteristic feature of WTS is a constantly low body temperature (well below 98.6 deg F) which causes low metabolism. Many other symptoms of this disease identified by Dr. Wilson are: overweight, fatigue, cold hands and feet, brittle nails, easy bruising, slow healing wounds, hair loss, dry skin and hair, frequent infections, frequent and persistent colds, constipation, depression, decreased memory, insomnia, migraines, infertility, low sex drive, and irregular periods.
Dr. Wilson advises taking temperature, by mouth, three times during the day and averages them together. If the average over a few days is well below 98.6 deg F, you most likely have WTS. Take first temperature 3 hours after arising in the morning, the second reading 3 hours later and the third another 3 hours later. If you get up at 7:00 am, your readings will be at 10:00 am, 1:00 pm and 4:00 pm. In case of women, they should avoid testing during the first few days of the menstruation cycle and the middle day of the cycle because their temperature changes naturally during these days. According to researcher Dr. Ray Peat, unsaturated oils block thyroid hormone secretion, it's movement in blood circulation and the response of tissues to the hormone. This leads to a depressed metabolism. Therefore, polyunsaturated vegetable oils such as corn, soybean, sunflower, safflower and canola oil should be avoided in the diet.
If Coconut oil is included in the daily diet, it can raise metabolism and body temperature and reverse the WTS symptoms over time. These healing properties of Coconut Oil are due to it's high content (49%) of medium chain triglycerides (MCT). Research done by Dr. Nahla Baba (1) and colleagues has shown that MCT boosts the metabolic rate and promotes weight loss. Another study done by researcher Hill (2) and colleagues at the Vanderbilt University found that high amounts of MCT given in the diet for a period of six days increased the metabolism by 50%. More and more scientific research shows that including MCT rich oils such as Coconut oil in the diet for extended periods increases metabolism, causes weight loss and improves energy levels; thus reversing the WTS.
