Diarrhea or loose stools can be caused by a variety of factors, and in most scenarios the appropriate treatment would depend on this underlying cause. For example, if the case of diarrhea is caused because of an infection the treatment would need to address the infection or the underlying cause. Merely treating the symptom or the diarrhea in such a scenario may only prolong the illness. Diarrhea can be caused by a bacterial or viral infection, or parasites ingested through food and water, or even as a reaction certain medications or herbs, minerals, and artificial sweeteners. Intestinal disorders and allergies can also be responsible for diarrhea in some cases.
There are various natural treatment options for diarrhea and herbal remedies, but the most important consideration is your diet. Make it a point to avoid the consumption of apricots, peas, pears, prunes, plums, peaches and fruit juices among others. Foods that should constitute your diet however would include apples, bananas, papayas, carrots, pomegranate, potatoes, mint, buttermilk, and yogurt.
In addition to your dietary changes there are also natural remedies that you can try out.
- Dehydration is the main danger that stems from dysentery and diarrhea, so make it a point to consume a lot of water even if you do not feel any thirst. Add a pinch of salt and sugar or an electrolyte solution that is available over the counter.
- An effective herbal remedy can be prepared with mint or peppermint leaves or essence. Three to four cups of water, with a few drops added in, can be consumed daily.
- You could also use half a teaspoon of dry ginger in a cup of buttermilk as an effective remedy, Drink this at least three to four times a day.
- Pomegranate juice is believed to help treat diarrhea, and you can also chew on the inner lining of a pomegranate with a pinch of salt.
- Grate a raw papaya and add three cups of water to it. Boil the mixture for at least ten minutes, after which you can strain it and consume.
- Chewing on roasted cumin seeds that are made into a mixture with curd is believed to help improve digestive capacity and is therefore recommended after meals.
I would not advice the use of herbal remedies since you are unaware of the cause of diarrhea, as the use of herbs can be detrimental in certain infections.
