A throat infection is usually caused by a virus or by bacteria. Although this kind of infection occurs independently, it is often an indication of another condition such as influenza or the common cold. The most common manifestation of a throat infection is a sore throat which is a very irritating condition and may be accompanied by swollen lymph glands, difficulty while swallowing, and severe pain in the throat.
A number of things can soothe a throat infection. You could sip lemon juice and honey mixed into hot water or tea through the day. You should suck on lozenges through the day to provide relief from the pain and the itchy feeling in the throat. Inhaling steam using a humidifier is also a favoured way to soothe a bad throat. Take steam inhalations three times a day for fifteen minutes until the pain lessens or disappears. Mix one teaspoon of salt in a tall glass of lukewarm water and gargle with this three times a day. You can also mix one tablespoon of brandy or whiskey into a glass of lukewarm water and use it to gargle with. This will help to numb the pain in your throat. You should also increase your fluid consumption - drink plenty of hot liquids such as soup and water. If your symptoms last longer than a couple of days, ensure that you consult a doctor at once.
