Causes of Bipolar Disorder

The exact causes of bipolar disorder are still not known. Research indicates that a combination of factors can lead to the development of this debilitating condition. There are several risk factors which may point towards the condition. These include:

  • Genetics: People with family members who suffer from bipolar disorders are more likely to develop the condition.
  • Stress: If you are genetically vulnerable to bipolar disorder, a stressful event in your life could trigger off the condition. Life events such as death of a loved one, a divorce, losing your job, getting married, childbirth or moving all involve drastic changes – both good and bad – that increase stress levels that can be unmanageable to some.
  • Drug Abuse / Substance Abuse: While excessive drug abuse or alcoholism does not directly cause bipolar disorder, it can trigger off an episode. Constant abuse of drugs such as cocaine or amphetamines can aggravate symptoms of mania whereas alcohol induces depression.
  • Medication: Certain types of medication such as antidepressants, appetite suppressants, thyroid medication, caffeine, and corticosteroids can trigger off attacks of mania.
  • Changes in Season: Many people are affected with seasonal changes in the weather and suffer from manic episodes with the onset of summer, and depression during winter and fall.
  • Lack of Sleep: Sleep deprivation of even a few hours can trigger off a manic attack in people vulnerable to bipolar disorder.
