Treatment for Bipolar Disorder



The aim of any treatment for Bipolar Disorder is to reduce symptoms and recurrence of episodes as well as increase your ability to function normally. Treatment includes:

  • Educating yourself about the condition
  • Lifestyle changes
  • Support groups
  • Therapies such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, interpersonal and social rhythm therapy, and family-focused therapy
  • Other complementary treatments for bipolar disorder include light and dark therapy (to improve sleep and mood cycles), meditation (to reduce stress), and acupuncture
  • Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is used in severe cases where medication does not help
  • Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) may be used after ECT to treat affected areas of the brain
