Treatment for Mesothelioma
Your treatment for mesothelioma will depend on the part of the body affected and the severity of your symptoms. Unfortunately, mesothelioma is an aggressive form of cancer and is normally discovered only in the advanced stages when any cure is impossible. In such cases, doctors focus more on keeping the patient comfortable rather than aiming for a cure or recovery. Treatment options for mesothelioma include:
- Surgery: This is normally carried out if the disease is detected in the early stages. Surgery may help remove all cancerous tissues and prevent the spread of cancer to other parts of the body. Surgical procedures can include surgery to remove the build-up of fluid or the removal of infected tissue lining. In some cases, the entire lung or surrounding tissue may have to be removed to relieve symptoms of the disease.
- Chemotherapy: Administered to kill cancer cells in different parts of the body.
- Radiation Therapy: Is used to reduce signs and symptoms of mesothelioma especially pleural mesothelioma.
- Combination Therapy: Generally a combination of chemotherapy, radiation therapy and surgery may be used to treat the disease.
