Bronchitis is caused by virus or bacteria and basically refers to the conditioned when the lining of the bronchial tubes which connect the lungs to the windpipe are inflamed due to an infection. Symptoms include cough, breathing problems and tightness in the chest and it is caused either by common cold, or more commonly due to smoking or breathing in fumes and dust over a prolonged duration. The best treatment for bronchitis is prevention, by quitting smoking and avoiding exposure to smoke, other fumes and dust. Antibiotics are sometimes prescribed by doctors but they only suppress the symptoms temporarily and consumption over long periods can also make the bacteria resistant to the medication and thus be ineffective.
Ginger helps to treat bronchitis from the roots, clearing the congestion and irritation in the chest. You can consume ½ teaspoon of ginger powder, ½ teaspoon of pepper and ½ teaspoon of ground cloves mixed with honey, thrice daily to clear the chest. Garlic has also been used to cure bronchitis. Mullein tea, fresh thyme, fenugreek and nettles have been used commonly in Europe to cure bronchitis as well as other lung inflammations. You can also opt for aromatherapy which helps to clear the lungs of mucus. Essences such as those of Easter Lily, Eucalyptus, Lungwort and Lavender have strong expectorant properties and should be inhaled twice or thrice a day. Finally drink plenty of water to keep the body hydrated and thus make it easier for the mucus to be cleared from the system.
