How do I reduce swelling on my eyelid (looks infected from a ingrown hair)?
(Last Updated: Jul 20, 2007)
Ingrown hairs can cause a significant amount of pain around the regions they develop. Moreover, the fact that you have developed an ingrown hair on the eyelid means that the inflammation is even more pronounced. An ingrown hair is the result of the hair curling back or growing sideways into the skin. If you are unsure about whether the inflammation is the result of an ingrown hair, look for some part of a hair follicle lying just under the skin.
While removal of an ingrown hair is usually very simple and can be performed with the help of a pair of tweezers, given its current location, this could be a very dangerous method to attempt as one could blind themselves if not very careful. As a result, it is highly advisable that you approach a doctor to help reduce swelling on the eyelid as well as help with swollen eyelid treatment. There are also a number of medication products that are said to help with swollen eyelid treatment, but you may want to check with your doctor before consumption. This is necessary as some medications are likely to cause an allergic reaction and make the condition substantially worse. The best treatment products will usually include extracts of witch hazel, allantoin and Azulene.

Probably one of the biggest problems that swollen eyelids pose to a person's lifestyle is the fact that they can severely limit the ability to open one's eyes normally and therefore substantially affect eyesight. Causes of swollen eyelids are normally rather mild factors such as in the case of blocked oil glands, but can also be the result of life threatening conditions such as anaphylactic shock. Some of the more common symptoms of swollen eyelids include excessive sneezing as well as watery or itchy eyes.
Because of the fact that swollen eyelids are a very common concern, there are a number of home remedies that have been developed all over the world to help remedy the condition. For instance, you could try soaking a tea bag in water for a period of about 15 minutes and then squeezing the water out. Once done, place the tea bag in the refrigerator for a period of about an hour before applying it to the swollen eyelid. The antioxidants in tea, especially chamomile tea, will substantially help in the reduction of swelling. Another option is to dab a swab of cotton in ice water and squeeze the water out lightly before placing it on your swollen eyelid for a period of about ten minutes.

A swollen eyelid can be due to various reasons, the most common of these being a blockage of the tear duct. When the tear duct is blocked, the secretions that helps to keep the eyes moist, builds up in the eyelids, leading to a swelling of the same, leading to the development of a sty. A warm compress over the affected area is the most commonly used home remedy for swollen eyelid. Washing the swollen eyelid with warm water allows the secretions to melt and flow out of the tear duct, thereby reducing the swelling. An itchy sensation may be experienced due to the swelling but it is advisable that you do not touch the eyelid, for fear of transferring any infection to the other eye. The best known swollen eyelids cure is to place slices of cucumber over the eyelid in order to provide relief from any burning or itchy sensations that you may be experiencing. In case you feel that the swelling is not going down, or if you are experiencing increased levels of discomfort, it is advisable that you visit your doctor. This will help as the doctor could prescribe some medications that will help to relieve you of your condition.

Well, usually the first thing I do is dampen a face rag in warm water and place it over your infected eye to bring down the swelling. By it being over your eye, it would be kind of hard to pull the ingrown hair out, but if so just be careful, it my be a little irritating.
